As a guest lecturer in photography at Avans AKV/St. Joost, Breda, where I bring a course entitled The Past in the Present, I encourage students to develop an effective method of problematizing a subject, and analyzing its place in history by using texts and/or images. The process of critical reflection, research, analysis and interrogating the representation of the subject is more important than the outcome. Students are expected to formulate their ideas and questions clearly and effectively, and to demonstrate their growing depth of understanding. They are also expected to express their reflections on this specific past in the form of a textual and/or visual essay.
